BONGIWE KUNENE is the head of Public Sector Banking at Standard Bank, South Africa. She is responsible for the Bank’s portfolio comprising municipal finance; provincial government development finance; financing of national, provincial and municipal owned entities, and banking services for social sectors including education and health.
Prior to joining Standard Bank, Bongi was part of the South African Presidency team that worked on a response to the global financial crisis response in 2008, providing support to the President on the G20 summit. Ms. Kunene has also led the Department for Economic Development in the Gauteng Province, where she oversaw consumer advocacy, dispute resolution, business licensing, as well as a number of offices and agencies including the Provincial Public Entities: Blue IQ, the Gauteng Economic Development Agency, the Gauteng Gambling Board, the Gauteng Film Office, Gauteng Tourism and the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller. In this capacity, she launched an initiative honoring women, and under her office produced workshops for youth and women.
Staff members of the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB) are up in arms over a decision by the provincial department of economic development (DED) to relocate their offices from Johannesburg’s northern.

In the 90s she was based at the board of the World Bank in Washington DC where she worked as senior advisor to Executive Director for Africa Group, and she was previously a member of the Audit and Advisory Committee of the UNDP, New York.
The Board collects gambling taxes and levies on gambling transactions on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) and other beneficiaries. Measures to promote responsible gambling and minimise incidences of problem gambling. The GGB recognises that opportunities for gambling pose particular risks for the people of Gauteng. Chief Operating Officer Gambling contributes to the growth and development of Tourism and the economy in the Gauteng Province. Gambling also stimulates the creation of job opportunities and contributes to the alleviation of poverty in the province.
Ms. Kunene holds a Masters of Science in Development Economics from the University of London, UK and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Zululand, South Africa.
